We’re now approaching the warm summer months and our pets will be outside even more as we get into the summer months. More trips to the park, or the lake, and maybe even more day trips and vacations. The more they are outside, just like us humans, the better the chance for all types of injuries.
If we’re talking about cats and dogs, one of the most common pet injuries is lacerations from falls or scuffles with other animals or bites from various insects and bugs.
One of the best ways experts say to deal with these is to try and prevent them by spraying your pet before you head out especially if you’re going into a wooded area for a walk. Make sure you check your pet going in and coming out to make sure they don’t have any injuries you need to deal with.
Many pets especially dogs experience eye injuries from long hanging branches and other obstacles that they run in to during their outdoor time. Experts again say that if your pet gets an injury to the eye, they should be seen by a veterinarian.
More pets are bitten by snakes than you might think. Depending on the region of the country in which you live, you’ll need to be careful and mindful of the fact that your dog or cat could be bitten by a snake. Experts always say it’s a good idea to go straight to the vet whenever your pet gets a snake bite.
Another very common wound is a puncture wound. Your pet always has all fours on the ground and if you’re walking around an unfamiliar place, you could walk over foreign objects such as glass. It’s very common and can cause your pet a lot of discomfort. They are of particular concern to vets because you sometimes can miss them. If you feel anything such as a bubble under your pets fur, you may want to have it looked at to make sure you remove the object and stop any infection before it gets going.
Pets involved in traffic accidents are obviously more common during the warm months. If your pet is involved in such an accident, experts say, move them to the side of the road very slowly, call for help immediately and keep them calm. Even animals experience shock so take the time to keep your pet as calm as possible. If there is any bleeding, take a towel and apply pressure to stop that bleeding while you wait for help. If you need to get your pet to the vet in a hurry, you can use a pet carrier or a small area rug to pick them up and get them in your car.
Just being aware of these issues and how to deal with them will make you better prepared say experts. Be prepared, stay calm and get your pet the help they need in a hurry.
