Take a Walk

Spring is bringing longer, warmer days which means pet walks are on the horizon. Being involved in a pet walk can be a fun and memorable time for you and your pet as well as a good way to contribute and support your favorite cause. Events feature a short walk and are often highlighted by musicians, information and product booths and sponsors handing out free trial goodies. Participating in a pet walk can be a great way for you and your pet to get into shape to don your short-shorts, take in scenery, meet fellow pet lovers, set up pet play dates and learn more about your charity of choice. Take a little time to prepare your critter and yourself so you both have an enjoyable time.

Pet walk events can feature journeys ranging from ¼ mile long to 1.5 miles long. Although neither distance is terribly far, when you factor in heat and crowds, even a short distance can become much longer to a small creature. A new environment loaded with unfamiliar people and other pets can get your animal’s heart pounding, adrenaline pumping and mind racing. Give them extra attention, love and petting at this time and remain calm yourself to help keep your pet a ease during the event. Be sure to get out and do a little endurance training with your pet to prepare for the event. A few walks each week should be sufficient or you can make a ritual of a brisk walk every morning or early evening, when temperatures are cooler. Also be certain to have water and a few treats on hand for your hungry pet for during and after their exciting new journey. If it is going to be a sunny and hot day, you may want to look into getting pet-friendly sunscreen to be sure your pet does not go home with a burned nose or body.

Preparing for and participating in a pet walk is beneficial to your favorite charity and also an added bonus to improving your health. Daily walks or even just a few walks a week get you and your pet into great condition just in time for shorter hemlines. Added exercise to your routines will slim your waistlines as well as improve your cardiovascular health. If you do not have a pet but do not want to miss out on all the fun, you can participate in a pet walk as a volunteer, entertainer or sponsor. You can also support a pet walk charity as a spectator and take in the good times on the sideline as you cheer champion critters to the finish.
